While maintaining healthy hair is vital, you may be surprised to learn that having healthy hair does not necessarily guarantee you the hair you’ve always wanted; it simply provides you with a healthy foundation to create the results you’re looking for. There are a number of simple changes you can make to your hair care routine, and a few bad habits you can drop, to significantly change how you feel about your hair every day.
Do: Use the appropriate products.
If your hair is dry, dull, and prone to breaking, everyday shampoos and conditioners are not going to have the hair-fortifying or moisturizing properties your damaged hair needs. Switching to a hair strengthening shampoo, a revitalizing conditioner, and a split end treatment will offer an instant improvement in your hair quality and styling options.
If you have oily hair, opt for a dry shampoo instead of frequent washing.

A proper hair care routine consists of salon quality shampoo,
conditioner, and styling products.
conditioner, and styling products.
Don’t: Keep buying products that aren’t giving you the results you want.
Stop wasting your money, schedule an appointment with a stylist to discuss your options, and use that time to talk to a professional about exactly what you are looking for and what kind of budget you’d like to work within. Maybe the perfect product for you isn’t on the salon shelf but an educated and experienced stylist will know how to guide you in the right direction.
Do: Ditch your cotton pillowcase.
Cotton is an absorbent fiber and its rougher texture causes friction against our skin and hair. Read more about Why You Should Ditch Your Cotton Pillow Case here – but to sum it up for you: a satin pillowcase is a better choice and a silk pillowcase is the best choice. |
Don’t: Ever wrap your hair in a regular bath towel again.
Water, especially warm water, causes the hair cuticle to swell. Just like sleeping on a cotton pillowcase, wrapping your hair in a cotton or terry cloth towel after washing it increases friction and the chance of your hair getting caught in the woven fibers. That stress wears each strand down over time, especially the more fragile strands around your face, leaving your hair more prone to frizz, breakage, and split ends.
Instead, choose an ultra-absorbent and fast drying microfiber towel like the Aquis hair towel.

Do: Talk to your hairstylist
The most important thing you can do if you really want to get the hair you’ve always wanted, is talk to a professional. Whether you’ve been loyal to the same stylist for many years, or are seeing someone for the first time, start your next appointment with “I want my hair to look like [whatever you want your hair to look like] and this is what I am currently struggling with.” And then take a moment to really listen. (Take it a step further and follow your stylists’ instructions; just see what happens!) If this approach does not open the door to a comfortable and informative conversation resulting in suggestions and guidance from the professional you are paying for this service, it might be time to see a new stylist.
|
Don’t: Be unrealistic.
Please keep in mind that even in a comfortable, informative, suggestion and guidance filled conversation, you may not like what you hear. An experienced professional will be very honest with you about what is and isn’t possible. If 3 stylists tell you the platinum hair you’re dying (pun intended) to have will take 6 months and multiple supportive treatments, and one stylist promises you it’s possible in 2 hours….prepare yourself for disappointment and likely hundreds of dollars in corrective color and restorative appointments.

We all want to look like celebrities sometimes - but switch it up. Make a few simple changes, ditch some bad habits and focus on celebrating your look instead.
Vantage Tip: Think about switching up your ponytail placement. Tight ponytails, braids and buns are stylish, but they weaken and wear down hair, especially if your hair is fine. We can be creatures of habit and this is an easy adjustment that will support the integrity of your hair, especially in the areas you habitually secure your ponytail. In addition to switching up your ponytail placement, consider a no-crease ribbon that won’t pull or dent your hair like the traditional ponytail holders.
